When you think of Japan, Tokyo likely springs to mind as the ultimate destination. But let’s face it, as vibrant and diverse as Tokyo is, it can also be overwhelming. That’s why, after a few days in the city, seeking solace in nature becomes not just a desire, but a necessity.

Just 90 minutes away from Tokyo by Shinkansen lies Hakone, a tranquil haven renowned for its traditional onsens and breathtaking views of Mount Fuji. While it can get touristy, with the right guidance, you can navigate Hakone like a pro, steering clear of the crowds.

Our journey led us to a traditional Ryokan for an overnight stay—a quintessential Japanese “bed & breakfast” famed for its serene onsen baths and exquisite Kaiseki Dinners. We opted for historic charm and convenience, choosing Fukuzumiro, one of Hakone’s oldest Ryokans, conveniently located within walking distance from Hakone Yumoto station.

Upon arrival, we were able to drop off our luggage before check-in, freeing us to explore unencumbered.

To make the most of Hakone’s offerings, we utilized the Hakone Free Pass, an all-in-one ticket covering train, funicular, ropeway, boat, and bus rides. Planning an overnight stay allowed us to leisurely explore the region’s myriad attractions, ensuring we didn’t miss a thing.

A must-see is Owakudani, famed for its life-extending black eggs and stunning vistas. And don’t forget to sample the black ice cream—a quirky delight!

Descending the ropeway to Lake Ashi, we embarked on a scenic cruise, marveling at Mt. Fuji and the iconic Torii gate of Hakone Shrine. Whether you choose to delve into Hakone’s history or simply unwind, there’s something for everyone.
